Why do parking meters always reject the last coin?

I had an early breakfast meeting with a business associate at Century City (a big shopping centre in the middle of Cape Town). When I wanted to leave, the parking meeting rejected my last two Rand coin (after receiving about six coins without a problem). It was almost as if the machine was designed to reject the last coin. Needless to say, it was not a good way to start my day.

'cause secretly, they also want to have a say... or maybe maybe they want you to stay a little longer ;)
